The Importance of Getting A Drain Cleaning Service Today

You use all of your appliances almost on a daily basis. But do you also think about properly cleaning it as often as needed? And not just the appliance units, but the pipes connected to them as well. Take your washing machine for example. The drain pipes connected to it are probably not as clean as you might think. One of the most serious infestations that you might find there is black mold which is a grave health hazard. And it is not just the molds that you should be worrying about. There are also mildew, germs, and bacteria that each can cause illness to your family. That is why before you start having problems with mounting hospital bills, you should start considering having a drain cleaning service from expert plumbers.

Home Drainage System

You can just imagine all the types of waste that go through our home’s drainage system. It is no wonder that the common plumbing problem are blocked drains, mostly because people keep on throwing almost anything down their drains. That should never be the case. All those trash and waste will eventually build up there and cause various foul smells. Consider yourself lucky if that is the only thing that you will be worrying about. Because foul smell can easily move from one place to another, especially with the interconnection of household piping systems. So that foul smell might move from the kitchen even to your bathroom.

And when something starts smelling bad it only means germs and bacteria have already set in. So if that is the case with your kitchen sink, just think of the time you are preparing your food over that sink or right beside it on the kitchen counter. The food you are preparing for your family might get contaminated, the last thing you definitely would want to happen.

Keeping your sink and drain pipes clean

So how can you keep your sink and your drain pipes clean? You can use all the chemicals that you can find in the household cleaners aisle in the supermarket, these are after all specially formulated to get rid of the blockage and the grime build up. Or you can use some times you would normally find in your own home like vinegar and bleach, which both will work fine to a certain degree. But nothing still beats getting a professional drain cleaning service from your reputable plumbers. Because not only should you have your drainage pipes cleaned, but all the other plumbing systems as well. Your service tank should also be scheduled for clean up. Your water pipes should also be checked to make sure there are no leaks which could cause small debris to enter your home’s water system.

Use a professional drain cleaning service

Again, while you can follow some do it yourself techniques to clean your own drainage pipes, you can only do so much cleaning with these methods. Just think of the years of mold, grime, bacteria, and waste that have already built up in your piping system. Only a professional drain cleaning service can do the right job for you. And expense should never be an easy as it is always your family’s health and safety that is on the line.

Unblocking and Cleaning Your Drainage Systems

1. Blocked Toilet

a. When you flush the pan, if it rises high and stays at a high level for a long period of time the blockage is very local to the pan. Using hot water or a loo brush you maybe able to unblock it yourself.

b. If toilet pan rises but then goes back to its normal level very quickly this indicates that the blockage is further away and therefore I would suggest checking the closest manhole. You may be able to unblock it using plastic drain rods. Always remember to keep the rods securely tightened as they may come undone otherwise.

2. Blocked Sink/Bath

a. If the sink/bath is slow to drain (i.e. water does not go away) the blockage is usually very local. This can be a very simple fix by un-doing the waste trap ‘u’ bend and removing any debris before re-fixing.

b. If the sink/bath drains away but is a lot slower than usual this could be that there is a blockage or restriction within the waste pipe. Caught early you may cure it with mild chemicals purchased from local stores or you would need to contact your local drain company.

3. Blocked Shower

a. If the shower does not drain away at all this suggests the blockage is very local to the waste trap ‘u’ bend. Often with showers you cannot access the waste trap and the only option available is to use mild chemicals or remove as much hair as you can using a metal coat hanger or similar object.

b. If the above fails, I suggest contacting your local drainage company as electro-mechanical machinery would be required.

4. Open Drains

a. Check all open gullies for any debris or leaves as around this time it’s very common for these types of drain to become blocked.

b. If all foreign debris is clear of open drains but they still appear blocked, check any manholes that are near as this can then determine as to where the pipe may be blocked. Plastic drain rods would be good for this job. Always remember to keep rods securely tightened.

5. Blocked Manhole

a. If drains are overflowing or a toilet is slow to drain away, lift and inspect manhole covers.

b. Plastic drain rods can be good for this type of job but again always remember to keep rods securely tightened as they may come undone.

6. Blocked Gutters

a. To determine where the water is flooding over or from which joint, always start at the lowest point and work up.

b. Should you discover that the down pipes are clear and free flowing, which points towards the gutters being blocked, for health and safety reasons, I suggest calling on your local drainage company.

7. Sani Flows>

a. I suggest contacting an approved sani flow engineer as water and electric do not mix and this could result in serious injury.

8. Shared Drains

a. Many properties have shared drains. If your drains are overflowing and you’re not emptying any waste water into your drains it is very likely that the neighbours’ drains could be blocked. Its worth a knock to ask them to check theirs.

b. Plastic drain rods are the job for this but always remember to keep rods securely tightened. Some drains can be deep and not always a good idea to tackle yourself. In these cases it’s a good idea to contact your local drainage company.

9. Blocked Sewer

a. If you know that your drains do not connect with any neighbours and lead directly to the main sewer and a number of neighbours are also experiencing similar symptoms it is likely that the main sewer is blocked. Contact your local water company or have your local drainage company confirm it first.

10. Tools

a. Whenever tackling a drain task always make sure the tools and equipment you are using are in good condition i.e. don’t use damaged drain rods or loose fittings.

b. Always look after your tools and equipment and wash and clean them. You never know when they might have to come out next.
